About Our Camp

Kizuna's Summer Camp is a local program for kids ages 7-13 (entering 2nd grade to entering 8th grade), centered on building a foundation of Japanese American culture & heritage.

Our camp is a high caliber program: we select instructors from the community’s cultural experts, counselors who are carefully vetted and rigorously trained, and have workshops and activities optimized for passing on the Japanese American tradition.

Culture & Heritage

Nikkei Discovery Camp is a fun and exciting way for your kids to learn about their culture and heritage. We pride ourselves on creating a program that our campers will remember. Example activities include: mochitsuki, Japanese calligraphy, family oral histories, Japanese American values, book readings and much more.

Sample Workshops

Most newcomers are curious about the workshops and activities that we host at camp. We'll provide some examples below to give you a sense of the topics that we cover and our teaching methodology.

Mottainai

Mottainai means “regret over wastefulness.” We teach our students this important Nikkei cultural value in unique ways.

Naganishi Somen

While not a JA tradition, Nagashi Somen, or “flowing somen”, is a common activity in Japan. Somen noodles flow down bamboo pipes as people grab and eat it up with their hashi.

Undokai

Undokai is the annual health and field day done in Japanese grade schools. A fun activity hosted during Kizuna's 2015 Summer Camp.

Famous Photos

This workshop teaches our students about the Japanese American incarceration experience during WWII by recreating famous historical photos of the camp experience. Students also reflect and answer personally why it's important to remember this history.

Shoyu Cucumbers

This workshop teaches our students how to make shoyu cucumbers, or cucumbers soaked in a soy sauce broth. Students prepare the ingredients, and assemble everything together into tasty dishes.

Staff Training

Kizuna's staff training modules are conducted to build a safe, exciting, and learning environment for your child. We host our trainings annually and are excited to announce a few new ones this year.

Conflict Resolution

This module trains our counselors in conflict resolution. Counselors will learn tips and insights on conflict resolution skills such as ability to see problems from multiple perspectives, ability to empathize, and ability to think and act critically and objectively.

Student Management and Development

This module trains our counselors in tips and methods for effectively managing and developing their small group of students. Student management entails getting student attention, dealing with noise and disruptions, and tips on facilitating lessons and small group discussions. Student development entails enhancing team bonding and group dynamics, as well as becoming a mentor.

Counselor Leadership Standards

This module trains our counselors in the expected and appropriate standards of behavior, both with fellow counselors as well as when interacting with students. Module trains counselors to have an increased awareness and ability to encourage positive and appropriate behavior.
